Designing an Intuitive Web Application User Interface

Ever heard of SaaS, aka Software as a Service? It’s a web based application (typically a service) that allows users to access lisenced software and its many functions via their browser.

Due to the growing popularity of SaaS, more and more companies are moving their traditional business processes to the web. As a result, the productivity and efficiency of the users (employee/clients) amplify twofold.

The best part of moving to SaaS is that it lets you make things easier for the end-user. For one thing, it doesn’t require any specific platforms to run. Plus, it also doesn’t need any type of prolonged installation at all.

Regardless, not all web based applications are able to fetch the productivity or efficiency companies expect. Hence, due to lower productivity and inefficiency, they drop the application and move on to a different one. The key component seen causing such costly failure is usually the lack of intuitive user interface design.

Be it a website, mobile app or web-based application interface, a simple and efficient user experience is what leads to an ideal user interface. It not only makes things easier to understand for the users but also make their work less demanding.

5 Design Principles That Lead To Efficient User Interface

There are a number of components you can tweak or play with to improve User Interface. However, the most essential of all that require due diligence are as follows.

  • Web application designs must have a simple and intuitive user interface. It shouldn’t be cluttered with too many controls. To de-clutter the interface, give a drop-down menu containing functions used infrequently.
  • Lean user interfaces, especially for system applications, are ones that allow users to be efficient and thus more productive. Efficiency can best be achieved by providing shortcuts to important functions such as those in MS Word, etc.
  • Help pop-ups should be given as prompts to help the users un-stuck themselves from errors that they come across now and then
  • The state of the links or buttons should be highlighted clearly so the user can comprehend whether it is clicked or not, or pressed or not in case of buttons.
  • Last but not the least, an efficient application always has a dashboard as well. Dashboard allows users to view all necessary information (such as overview of the balance sheet, graph of the revenue, etc.) at one place or tab.
